The digestive tract belongs to the small intestine and is located between the duodenum and ileum. The lumen is 3 to 5 cm in diameter, and the intestinal wall consists of four layers: mucosa, submucosa, muscular layer, and serosa. The jejunum exhibits peristaltic, pendular, and segmental movements, and the vagus nerve acts to promote and the sympathetic nerve acts to inhibit. Intestinal juices are secreted from the intestinal glands scattered in the mucosa, and participate in the digestion of each nutrient. In this section, water, alcohol, monosaccharides, amino acids, salts, and some fatty acids are absorbed from the capillaries of the villi into the portal vein system, and most fatty acids enter the bloodstream through the lymphatic vessels of the villi through the thoracic duct.
