Japanese: セミホウボウ(蟬魴鮄) - セミホウボウ

It is a general term for marine fishes belonging to the Scorpaeniformes order and the Scutellidae family, or refers to one of these species. This species is so named because they have long pectoral fins like the wings of a cicada, and their English name "flying gurnard" comes from their habit of flying over the sea. Three species are found in the waters off Japan: the semi-gurnard Dactyloptena orientalis , the giant semi-gurnard D. gilberti , and the spotted semi-gurnard Daicocus peterseni . The giant semi-gurnard is found in southern Japan, while the semi-gurnard and the spotted semi-gurnard are found in a wide range from central Honshu south to South Africa.

カサゴ目セミホウボウ科に属する海産魚の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この仲間はセミの翅のような長い胸びれがあるのでこの名があり，英名のflying gurnardは海上を飛ぶという習性による。日本近海にはセミホウボウDactyloptena orientalis，オキセミホウボウD.gilberti，ホシセミホウボウDaicocus peterseniの3種が分布する。オキセミホウボウは南日本に分布するが，セミホウボウとホシセミホウボウは本州中部以南から南アフリカまでの広い範囲に分布する。
