Thomasius, Christian
Born: January 1, 1655 in Leipzig
Died: September 23, 1728, Halle. German philosopher and jurist. In 1672, at the age of 17, he became a Magister (bachelor) in philosophy. From 1675, he studied law at Frankfurt am Oder, obtaining his doctorate in 1679, and was active as a lawyer. From 1784 to 1790, he was a professor at the University of Leipzig, during which time he gave his first lectures in German in 1787. In 1794, he was instrumental in the founding of the University of Halle, and from 1798 until his death, he was a professor of law there. In addition to philosophy and law, he also studied physics, mathematics, and history. He was one of the pioneers of the German Enlightenment, and advocated natural law in jurisprudence, and also contributed to the spread of natural science thought. His main work was "Fundamenta juris naturae et gentium" (1705).

ドイツの哲学者,法学者。 1672年 17歳で哲学のマギステル Magister (学士) となった。 75年以降フランクフルトアムオーデルで法律を研究,79年学位を得,法律家として活躍。 84~90年の間ライプチヒ大学の教授となり,この間 87年に初めてドイツ語で講義を行なった。 94年ハレ大学の創設に尽力,98年以後没するまで同大学法学教授。哲学,法律のほか物理学,数学,歴史を研究した。ドイツ啓蒙主義の先駆者の一人で,法律学では自然法を主張し,また自然科学思想の普及にも貢献した。主著"Fundamenta juris naturae et gentium" (1705) 。
