A light, comic musical drama, this is the translation of comic opera. In Japan, it is often used to include Italian opera buffa, French opera comique, vaudeville, German and Austrian singingspiel, operetta, Spanish zarzuela, British ballad opera, comic opera, and American musical comedy, but in the narrow sense it can also refer to operetta. In America, the term light opera is also used. A common feature of these musical dramas is that the story unfolds with dialogue exchanged between pieces of music, and the content is not limited to comedy. Bizet's famous Carmen was originally composed as an opera comique. [Terasaki Hironori] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
