Comic opera

A light, comic musical drama, this is the translation of comic opera. In Japan, it is often used to include Italian opera buffa, French opera comique, vaudeville, German and Austrian singingspiel, operetta, Spanish zarzuela, British ballad opera, comic opera, and American musical comedy, but in the narrow sense it can also refer to operetta. In America, the term light opera is also used. A common feature of these musical dramas is that the story unfolds with dialogue exchanged between pieces of music, and the content is not limited to comedy. Bizet's famous Carmen was originally composed as an opera comique.

軽い、喜劇的な音楽劇の意で、comic operaの訳語。日本では、イタリアのオペラ・ブッファ、フランスのオペラ・コミック、ボードビル、ドイツとオーストリアのジングシュピール、オペレッタ、スペインのサルスエラ、イギリスのバラッド・オペラ、コミック・オペラ、アメリカのミュージカル・コメディなどのすべてをこれに含めることが多く、狭義にはオペレッタをさす場合もある。また、アメリカではライト・オペラlight operaという語も用いられている。これらの音楽劇に共通する特色は、音楽と音楽の間に台詞(せりふ)のやりとりがあってストーリーが展開することで、内容的には喜劇に限らない。有名なビゼーの『カルメン』も、本来はオペラ・コミックとして作曲されたものである。
