Intestinal medicine - Seichoyaku

Japanese: 整腸薬 - せいちょうやく

A drug that normalizes intestinal function when it is disturbed. Intestinal dysfunction manifests as symptoms such as diarrhea or constipation, so to treat these symptomatically, antidiarrheal drugs (antidiarrheal drugs) or laxatives are used, respectively. Digestive drugs are also effective when diarrhea is caused by indigestion, and intestinal bactericides are effective when intestinal function is disturbed by bacteria, i.e. infectious diarrhea or abnormal intestinal fermentation. Lactic acid bacteria preparations are intestinal regulating drugs that use lactic acid bacteria to prevent abnormal intestinal fermentation.

腸の機能が乱れた場合に，それを正常化する薬物。腸の機能の乱れは下痢もしくは便秘という症状となって現れるので，これらを対症的に治すためには，それぞれ止瀉（ししや）薬(下痢止め)あるいは緩下剤を用いる。また消化不良が原因で下痢が起こっている場合には消化薬が有効であるし，細菌によって腸機能が乱れる，すなわち感染性下痢や腸内異常発酵の場合には腸内殺菌薬が有効となる。乳酸菌製剤は乳酸菌の働きで腸内異常発酵を防ごうとする整腸薬である。
