1648‐1717 A French Catholic mystic. During her childhood, she was sickly and mentally unhappy, but she began to earnestly seek God and long for a devout religious life. She preached (1) the purification of the soul through prayer, (2) the importance of seeing oneself as oneself, which is nothing before God, completely abandoning self-love, and obtaining a new life that is truly free within God, and (3) that in order to do so, one must entrust everything to God. At one time she gained ardent followers at the court of Louis XIV, but the purity of the faith she preached was so radical that she was soon persecuted by the Catholic Church and driven out of Paris.
