A city in the northeastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies an alluvial plain including the Obase and Nagasa rivers, and faces the Suo Nada Sea. It includes the land-tied island of Minoshima. The city center is the former post town of Gyo-ji and Ichiba-cho Ohashi, and after the opening of the Nippō Main Line, it developed as the center of Kyoto County. In the rural areas, rice farming, fruit orchards and forced vegetable cultivation, seaweed farming centered around Minoshima, and shellfish harvesting are thriving. IC factories are located here, mainly in the electrical, metal, and furniture industries. In recent years, it has become a commuter town for Kitakyushu City. It branches off from the Heisei Chikuhō Railway, and the Higashi Kyushu Expressway passes through it. 福岡県北東部の市。1954年市制。小波瀬(おばせ)川,長狭(ながさ)川などの沖積平野を占め,周防(すおう)灘に臨む。陸繋(りくけい)島の蓑(みの)島を含む。中心市街は旧宿場町の行事(ぎょうじ)と市場町の大橋で,日豊本線開通後,京都(みやこ)郡の中心地として発達。農村部では米作,果樹や促成野菜の栽培,蓑島を中心にノリ養殖,採貝が盛ん。電機,金属,家具などの工業を中心にIC工場も立地する。近年は北九州市のベッドタウン化が進む。平成筑豊鉄道を分岐するほか,東九州自動車道が通じる。南西端に御所ヶ谷の神籠(こうご)石(史跡)がある。70.05km2。7万468人(2010)。
