Sumiyou [village] - Sumiyou

Japanese: 住用[村] - すみよう

A village in the central eastern part of Amami Oshima, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Population 1,901 (1995). The northeastern part borders Naze City. The village is surrounded by steep mountain ranges on three sides - north, south, and west - and a ria coast with steep cliffs on the eastern Pacific coast, with little flat land. Settlements are scattered in the Kawauchi River, Sumiyo River, and Yakugachi River basins, as well as in the small lowlands along the coast, with its centre in Nishinakama at the mouth of the Sumiyo River, and passed through by National Route 58. Forestry has been a thriving industry since ancient times, and there is a chip factory in Todama on the southern coast. Agriculture is centred on the cultivation of ponkan oranges and sugarcane, and beef cattle are also raised.

鹿児島県大島郡，奄美大島中東部の村。人口1901(1995)。北東部は名瀬市に隣接する。南，北，西の三方は急峻な山地，東の太平洋岸は急崖の連続するリアス式海岸で，平地に乏しい。集落は川内川，住用川，役勝（やくがち）川流域や海岸部のわずかな低地に散在，中心は住用川河口の西仲間で，国道58号線が通じる。古くから林業が盛んで，南部沿岸の戸玉にはチップ工場がある。農業はポンカン，サトウキビの栽培が中心で，肉牛の飼育も行われる。
