A seabird with a total length of 37 cm. In summer plumage (→ plumage), there are white spots around the eyes and on the beak, and the rest of the body is black-brown. The beak is black. The legs are bright red, and the Japanese name comes from the Ainu word for "red legs." In winter plumage, the white area around the eyes is smaller, the throat, foreneck, chest and belly are white, and the rest of the body is black-brown. They breed on islands from the Kuril Islands to the Sea of Okhotsk, the Amur region, Sakhalin Island, the Korean Peninsula and the coast of the Sea of Japan in Russia, and they do not move south much in winter, but stay in northern waters. In Japan, they breed in groups on Teuri Island, Yururi Island, Moyururi Island, Daikoku Island in Hokkaido, Benten Island in Aomori Prefecture, and Sankan Island in Iwate Prefecture. They lay eggs in the depths of cliffs where rocks pile up, or between rocks. Among seabirds, this species feeds in the waters relatively close to land, diving to catch fish such as sand lance, as well as crustaceans and squid.

チドリ目ウミスズメ科。全長 37cmの海鳥。夏羽（→羽衣）では，眼のまわりと嘴に接する部分に白斑があり，体のほかの部分は黒褐色。嘴は黒い。脚は鮮赤色で，和名は「赤い足」を意味するアイヌ語からきている。冬羽では，眼のまわりの白色部が小さくなり，喉，前頸部，胸から腹は白く，ほかの部分は黒褐色。千島列島からオホーツク海，アムール地方，サハリン島，朝鮮半島とロシアの日本海沿岸にかけての島々で繁殖し，冬季もあまり南下せず，北方の海域にとどまって生活している。日本では北海道の天売島，ユルリ島，モユルリ島，大黒島，青森県の弁天島，岩手県の三貫島などで集団繁殖している。崖地の岩が重なる奥や岩と岩の間などに産卵する。海鳥類のなかでは比較的陸地に近い海域で採食し，潜水してイカナゴなどの魚類のほか，甲殻類やイカなどをとる。
