Subaru - Subaru

Japanese:
Subaru - Subaru

A literary magazine. From January 1909 (Meiji 42) to December 1913 (Taisho 2). 60 issues in total. Published by Subaru Publishing House. Editor and publisher was Ishikawa Takuboku, later Enami Bunzo. With Mori Ogai as its leader, it was founded by Kitahara Hakushu, Kinoshita Mokutaro, Yoshii Isamu, and others who had left "Myojo," along with Takuboku, Hiraide Shu, Hirano Banri, and others from the Shinshisha Society. It largely succeeded "Myojo," leading the trend of aesthetic new romanticism centered on poetry, and became a powerful base for anti-naturalism. In terms of novels and plays, the magazine included masterpieces such as "Half a Day" and "Vita Sexualis" (both 1909), which symbolized Ogai's revival in the literary world, "Youth" (1910), "Gan" (1911), Mokutaro's "Nanbanji Monzen" (1909), "Izumiya Dye Shop" (1911), and Nagata Mikihiko's "Mio" (1911). In terms of poetry, Hakushu, Mokutaro, Isamu, and Takamura Kotaro freely demonstrated their own worlds of expression. Kotaro's poetry, which crystallized in "Michido" (1914), along with Takuboku's criticism, sharply approached the contradictions of modern Japan and prepared the way for a new era. A reprint of "Subaru" (1965, Rinsen Shoten) is also available.
