Strawson - Sir Peter Frederick Strawson

One of the leading British philosophers. Born on November 23rd. In 1940, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University. After serving in the military for a time, he served as a research fellow at Oxford University from 1948, and in 1968 became professor of philosophy at the university, succeeding Gilbert Ryle. Since the 1950s, he has been a leading figure in the ordinary language school in British philosophy, publishing cutting-edge and influential papers in various fields such as logic, philosophy of logic, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, aesthetics, and ethics, as well as playing a leading role in Kant studies. He has also given lectures around the world and played an important role in universalizing the methods of contemporary British philosophy. For these achievements, he was knighted in 1977. His main work is The Groundwork of Logic (1952).

イギリスを代表する哲学者の一人。11月23日生まれ。1940年オックスフォード大学で哲学・政治学・経済学コースを修了して、文学士（B.A.）となり、一時軍務についたのち、1948年からオックスフォード大学の研究員を務め、1968年ギルバート・ライルの後任として同大学哲学教授となる。1950年代以降のイギリス哲学界において、日常言語学派の指導的立場にあり、論理学、論理学の哲学、言語哲学、心の哲学、美学、倫理学などの諸分野での先端的でかつ影響力の大きい論文を発表するとともに、カント研究においても指導的役割を果たした。また、世界各地で講演を行い、イギリス現代哲学の方法の普遍化のために力があった。これらの功績によって、1977年騎士の称号を授けられている。主著に『論理の基礎』（1952）がある。
