A wealthy Russian merchant and industrialist family. Originating from farmers on the White Sea coast, the family prospered from the beginning of the 16th century when Anika established a saltworks in Solbychegodsk. In 1558, the family received vast estates on the Kama and Chusovaya rivers from Ivan IV (the Terrible), and subsequently acquired other estates in Siberia. While developing these lands, the family also engaged in a wide range of businesses, including saltworks, ironworks, timber, and fur trade. The family built towns and forts, and advanced into the Urals and Siberia using private armies, overcoming resistance from the indigenous peoples and expanding their territories. A representative example of this was the Siberian campaign of Cossack leader Ermak Timofeevich in 1581. In the war of liberation from the Poles in the early 16th century, the family provided huge financial support to the liberation armies of DM Pozharsky and Minin-Suhoruk, contributing to the accession of Mikhail Romanov to the throne. The family continued to provide financial support to the financially struggling Romanov tsars, and Peter the Great bestowed upon them the titles of barons and Paul I the counts. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the family produced many politicians and high-ranking officials. They are also known for their encouragement of painting (icons), architecture, and literature.
