Stafford

It is the capital of Staffordshire County in the mid-west of England, and together with the surrounding area, it forms the Staffordshire District. It is located about 40 km north-northwest of Birmingham, and faces the River Saw, a tributary of the River Trent. It was founded in the late 9th century by Athelflächen, daughter of Alfred the Great, and developed as a market town. It had its own coin mint from the early 10th century to the late 12th century. Its main industries are shoemaking, electrical equipment, and machinery. Many old buildings remain, including High House and Chetwynd House, which were built in the 16th century. The highway and railway linking London, Birmingham, and Manchester run through it. The district area is 599 ^km2 . The district population is 120,653 (2001). The city population is 63,681 (2001).

Stafford, Thomas Patten

Born September 17, 1930 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. American astronaut. Graduated from the Naval Academy (1952) and served in the Air Force. In December 1965, he served on Gemini 6 with M. Schirra, and successfully rendezvoused with Gemini 7. In June 1966, he orbited the Earth 48 times with E. Cernan on Gemini 9. In May 1969, he flew to the Moon with astronauts Cernan and J. Young on Apollo 10, and successfully tested all functions of the Apollo spacecraft except for the moon landing, before returning.

アメリカの宇宙飛行士。海軍兵学校卒業 (1952) 後，空軍に勤務。 1965年 12月ジェミニ6号に M.シラーとともに乗組み，ジェミニ7号とのランデブーに成功。 66年6月ジェミニ9号で E.サーナンと地球を 48周。次いで 69年5月アポロ 10号でサーナン，J.ヤング両飛行士と月に向い，アポロ宇宙船の月着陸以外のすべての機能を成功裏にテストし，帰還した。
