It is the capital of Staffordshire County in the mid-west of England, and together with the surrounding area, it forms the Staffordshire District. It is located about 40 km north-northwest of Birmingham, and faces the River Saw, a tributary of the River Trent. It was founded in the late 9th century by Athelflächen, daughter of Alfred the Great, and developed as a market town. It had its own coin mint from the early 10th century to the late 12th century. Its main industries are shoemaking, electrical equipment, and machinery. Many old buildings remain, including High House and Chetwynd House, which were built in the 16th century.
