Vladimir Vasil'evich Stasov

A Russian music and art critic and art historian. Son of the famous architect Vasily P. Stasov. While working at the St. Petersburg Library, he engaged in various research projects, including archaeology and linguistics, but he is known for emphasizing the importance of ethnic and popular elements in the arts, influenced by Belinsky. In the field of music, he was the theoretical leader of the Russian national school of music, which included Balakirev and others, and provided materials and advice to Mussorgsky and Borodin when they composed their operas.

ロシアの音楽･美術評論家，芸術史家。高名な建築家ワシーリー･P.スターソフの子。ペテルブルグの図書館に勤めるかたわら，多方面の研究に取り組み，業績は考古学，言語学の領域にも及ぶが，ベリンスキーの影響をうけて，とくに芸術における民族的･民衆的要素の重要性を強調したことで知られる。音楽の分野では，バラーキレフらのロシア国民楽派の理論的指導者で，ムソルグスキーやボロジンのオペラの創作にあたっては，資料を提供し，助言も与えている。
