...The salon of the wife of the Minister of Finance was very popular. In France, the salons declined during the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, but in Berlin around that time, salons of Dorothea Mendelssohn (daughter of philosopher M. Mendelssohn), Rahel Varnhagen von Ense (1771-1833), Henriette Julie Herz (1764-1847), and others (all Jewish women) were held, providing the foundation for the development of German Romanticism. The influence of salons that resumed in France in the early 19th century decreased due to changes in social conditions, but salons such as those held by Madame de Stael (daughter of Necker) in Coppet, Switzerland, were very international, attracting intellectuals of various nationalities.
