Tin hydroxides in the oxidation states II and IV are known. [Tin(II) hydroxide] The chemical formula is Sn(OH) 2 . When an aqueous solution of ammonia or a dilute alkali hydroxide is added to an aqueous solution of a tin salt such as tin(II) chloride (SnCl 2 ) , a white precipitate is obtained. The degree of hydration varies depending on the conditions of formation, and there is no fixed composition, but it is usually written as Sn(OH) 2 . When heated to 160°C or higher, it decomposes to produce tin(II) oxide (SnO). The solubility product calculated for the reaction Sn 2+ +2OH - ⇄SnO (solid) + H 2 O is [Sn 2+ ][OH - ] 2 = 6.3×10 -27 (mol/l) 3 (25°C, ionic strength 0).
