〘Noun〙 A custom said to involve gathering up fallen sticks on the beach and heating a bath for the geese as a memorial service for them. Geese cross the sea with pieces of wood in their mouths to rest their wings, and when they reach land they drop the sticks on the shore. It was believed that in the spring they would return to the north with the sticks in their mouths, so the sticks left on the beach after the geese had gone were considered to belong to the geese who had died, and people gathered the sticks together to heat a bath for the geese as a memorial service and serve it to everyone. This is said to be a custom from Sotogahama in Tsugaru (Aomori prefecture). Wild Goose Memorial Service (gankuyo/karikuyo) .
