Criticism of Hu Shi's Thought

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a critical movement was launched against Hu Shi. The dogma that socialist intellectuals must criticize the pragmatism that Hu Shi espoused as bourgeois idealism is always a prerequisite, and it still hangs over Chinese intellectuals today. There have been two major movements criticizing Hu Shi in the past. The first was centered on a roundtable discussion critical of Hu Shi at Peking University in December 1951. The second was an extension of the criticism of "A Study on the Dream of the Red Chamber," which took place from 1954 to 1955.

新中国の成立後，胡適に対して行われた批判運動。社会主義の知識人ならば，胡適の奉じたプラグマティズムをブルジョアジーの観念論として批判しなければならないという教条が，つねに先行するものとして，今なお中国知識人に覆いかぶさっている。過去2回にわたって胡適を批判する大きな運動があった。最初は，1951年12月の北京大学での胡適批判座談会を中心とするもの。次は，《紅楼夢研究》批判の発展として，54年から55年にかけておこなわれたもの。
