An old town in Iishi District, eastern Shimane Prefecture. Mitoya, the town in the center, was a settlement at the mouth of the Mitoya River, a tributary of the Hii River, and was the terminus of river boats. It has been on a key route connecting the San'in and San'yo roads since ancient times, and is currently passed through by National Route 54. The town produces rice, vegetables, and Japanese beef. In November 2004, it merged with Daito Town, Kamo Town, and Kiji Town in Ohara District, Kakeya Town in Iishi District, and Yoshida Village to become a city, Unnan City. Area: 82.68 km2 . 島根県東部,飯石(いいし)郡の旧町。中心の三刀屋は斐伊(ひい)川の支流三刀屋川の渓口集落で,川舟の終点であった。古来山陰道と山陽道を結ぶ要路にあり,現在国道54号線が通じる。米,野菜,和牛などを産する。2004年11月大原郡大東町,加茂町,木次町,飯石郡掛合町,吉田村と合併し市制,雲南市となる。82.68km2。8486人(2003)。
