Sumon [village] - Sumon

Japanese: 守門[村] - すもん

A village in Kita-Uonuma County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 5,357 (1995). The Aburuma River, a tributary of the Uono River, flows south through the center of the village, and the main settlement is on a river terrace. The village is named after Mt. Morikado (1,538m) at the northeastern end. It is one of the snowiest areas in the prefecture, with an average of 3.5-4m of snow in winter, which lasts for five months. Cultivated land is very small, with an average of 50 ares per household, and the village is facing a depopulation problem. In 1971, the Japanese National Railways (now JR) Tadami Line was completed, and National Route 252 was also developed, and efforts are being made to attract factories, but most of the factories are small.

新潟県中部，北魚沼郡の村。人口5357(1995)。魚野川支流の破間（あぶるま）川が中央を南流し，河岸段丘上におもな集落がある。村名は北東端にある守門岳(1538m)にちなんでつけられた。県内でも有数の豪雪地帯で，冬季には平均3.5～4mの積雪があり，積雪期間は5ヵ月に及ぶ。耕地は1戸平均50aと零細で，過疎問題をかかえている。1971年に国鉄(現JR)只見線が全通し，国道252号線も整備され，工場誘致をすすめているが，小規模なものが多い。
