Sopron - Sopron (English spelling) Sopron

A small city in the northwestern tip of Hungary, at the eastern foot of the Alps. Population 56,175 (2001). It is close to Vienna, Austria (about 60 km) and is one of the most Westernized cities in Hungary. The city has many famous historical sites, such as the remains of a Roman castle, medieval churches and mansions, and there is a memorial museum of composer Liszt, who was born here. On the outskirts is the Esterházy palace, where Haydn was invited to stay. The food, textile, and lumber industries are thriving, and the red grape wine "Kekfrankos" is famous.
