Okayama Astrophysical Observatory

Okayama Astrophysical Observatory

A nationally shared observation facility attached to the National Astronomical Observatory of the National Institutes of Natural Sciences. It was established in 1960 to promote astrophysics research in Japan. The main observation equipment includes a 188-cm reflecting telescope manufactured by Grubb Parsons of the UK, a 91-cm reflecting telescope manufactured by Nippon Kogaku, and a 65-cm solar telescope. In 2006, a plan was decided to build a 380-cm telescope using new technology, which will be the largest in Japan. The facility has achieved many accomplishments in a wide range of fields, including early detection of asteroid and comet returns, spectroscopic research on A-type peculiar stars, low-temperature stars, binary stars, pulsating stars, and emission-line stars, galactic photometry, spectroscopic research on quasars and peculiar galaxies, optical identification of X-ray objects, observation of collisions between comets and Jupiter, and research on the solar magnetic field. It is located in Honjo, Kamogata-cho, Asakuchi-shi, Okayama Prefecture. It is located at the top of Chikurinji Mountain, 372 meters above sea level, and is close to the Okayama Astronomical Museum.

At the end of 2017, the open-use schedule for the 188-cm reflector telescope ended, marking the end of the facility's role as an open-use observatory. From 2018 onwards, the telescope has been operated by university researchers and others.
