…After examining the suitability of isoprene, butadiene, dimethylbutadiene, and other raw materials for synthetic rubber, butadiene was deemed the most promising, and research was conducted into its synthesis and polymerization methods. In Germany, IG Farben polymerized butadiene with a sodium catalyst to obtain synthetic rubber, so butadiene-based synthetic rubber was called Buna. Even after the polymerization method changed to emulsion polymerization without the use of a sodium catalyst, butadiene and styrene copolymer rubber was called Buna S, butadiene and acrylonitrile copolymer rubber was called Buna N, and so on. In 1933, the Nazi regime was established in Germany, and industrial production of Buna rubber was strongly promoted, with monthly production of 25 tons of Buna S reaching 200 tons in 1935 and annual production of 11,000 tons in 1943. …

…合成ゴムの原料としてイソプレン，ブタジエン，ジメチルブタジエンなどの適否が検討された結果，ブタジエンが最も有望であるとされ，その合成法，重合法が研究された。ドイツのイーゲー･ファルベン社ではブタジエン(Butadien)をナトリウム(Natrium)触媒で重合させて合成ゴムを得たことからブタジエン系合成ゴムをブナBunaとよび，その後，重合法が変わってナトリウム触媒を用いない乳化重合法になっても，ブタジエンとスチレンの共重合ゴムをブナS，ブタジエンとアクリロニトリルの共重合ゴムをブナNなどと同様の名称でよんだ。33年にはドイツにナチ政権が成立し，ブナゴムの工業生産が強力に推進され，35年には月産25t，43年には年産1万1000tものブナSが生産されるようになった。…
