Wall replacement - Kabeshiro

A type of screen used by the nobility. It is hung from a nageshi (rail-like wooden beam) at the boundary between the main house and the eaves of a shinden-zukuri style house. It is used to block out people's eyes and keep out the cold by hanging a blind on the front and hanging it just behind it. In winter, kneaded white plain silk or white twill is used, and in summer, raw white plain silk or white twill is used with a kneaded white plain silk lining in winter and raw white plain silk in summer. It is made in five or seven widths, and a plain silk quilting cord about 9 cm wide called a nosuji is attached to the center of each width before hanging. There are solid black ones and ones with deep red and purple plain silk stitched together in the center. In the Tale of Genji Illustrated Scroll ("Kashiwagi"), five hanging scrolls are depicted with a white cherry blossom pattern on the outer surface and a dandara patterned stripe, while in the "Yokobue" scroll, a white triple sash pattern on the outer surface and a black triple sash patterned stripe are depicted. When rolling up the scrolls, they are rolled up together on a thin board called a koha, which acts as a core, and tied with stripes.

公家調度で屏障具(へいしょうぐ)の一種。寝殿造の母屋(もや)と廂(ひさし)の境に長押(なげし)より垂らす。表面に御簾(みす)をかけ、そのすぐ裏にかけて、人目を遮るためや寒さを防ぐ目的に用いた。冬は練った白平絹(ひらぎぬ)か白綾(しらあや)、夏は生の白平絹か白綾に朽木(くちき)型を摺(す)り、冬は練り白平絹、夏は生白平絹の裏をつける。五幅(いつの)か七幅で製し、各幅の中央に野筋(のすじ)とよぶ幅9センチメートルほどの平絹の絎(く)け紐(ひも)をつけて垂らす。これには黒一色のものと、濃紅(こきべに)と蘇芳(すおう)色の平絹を中央ではぎ合わせたものがある。『源氏物語絵巻』（「柏木(かしわぎ)」）には表地が白桜花文の綾に描き絵がなされ、緂(だん)（だんだら）の野筋を垂らした五幅の壁代が、同じく「横笛」には表地が白三重襷文(たすきもん)の綾、黒三重襷文綾の野筋をつけた壁代が描かれている。壁代を巻き上げるときは木端(こは)といって、薄い板を芯(しん)にしていっしょに巻き上げ、野筋で結ぶ。
