Born: March 14, 1905, Paris
[Died] October 17, 1983. Paris. French political and sociological scientist and journalist. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School). During World War II, he participated in Marshal de Gaulle's La France libre in London, and became editor-in-chief of the magazine of the same name. After the war, he co-founded the magazine Les Temps modernes (1945) with Sartre and others. He was a prolific writer for left-wing magazines such as Combat, but later broke with Sartre and became more anti-Marxist. In 1955, he became a professor of sociology at the University of Paris, and wrote many books criticizing the Marxist view of economic history and analyzing industrialized society. He was an editorial writer for the newspaper Le Figaro. In 1970, he became a professor at the Collège de France. His major works include La Sociologie allemande contemporaine (Contemporary German Sociology) (1935) and L'Opium des intellectuels (The Opium of the Intellectuals) (1955).

フランスの政治・社会学者,ジャーナリスト。エコール・ノルマル・シュペリュール (高等師範学校) 卒業。第2次世界大戦中はロンドンでドゴール元帥の「自由フランス」 La France libreに参加。同名誌の主筆となった。戦後サルトルらとともに雑誌『タン・モデルヌ』 Les Temps modernesを創刊 (1945) 。『コンバ』 Combatなど左翼雑誌に健筆をふるったが,のちサルトルと決別,反マルクス主義の傾向を強めた。 1955年パリ大学教授となって社会学を講じ,マルクス主義的経済史観の批判,工業化社会の分析などに関する著書多数を著わした。『フィガロ』紙論説委員。 1970年コレージュ・ド・フランス教授。主著『現代ドイツ社会学』 La Sociologie allemande contemporaine (1935) ,『知識人たちの阿片』L'Opium des intellectuels (1955) 。
