Crystallization is the process of precipitating components contained in a solution as crystals. Crystallization is generally considered to consist of two processes: the generation of crystal seeds or nuclei and growth from the seeds. The driving force in the growth process is the degree of supersaturation of the solution, which governs the growth rate. The purpose of crystallization is usually purification and granulation, and the equipment that performs crystallization is called a crystallizer. Supersaturated solutions can be created by evaporation or cooling.
