Methods for redeeming government bonds can be divided into cash redemption and refinancing redemption, depending on the source of funds. Cash redemption is a system in which government bonds are redeemed by drawing down funds previously incorporated into the debt sinking fund. In contrast, refinancing redemption is a system in which the funds required to redeem government bonds are obtained by issuing new government bonds (issuing refinancing government bonds). There are two methods for issuing refinancing government bonds. The first method is called the conversion system, in which holders of government bonds that have reached the maturity date take on refinancing bonds and use those bonds to make payments instead of cash.
