...The foundations of this system were established after the end of the Muromachi period, and by the late Edo period it had almost reached completion. The Portuguese missionary Rodrigues arrived in Japan in 1577 (Tensho 5), and he saw four types of banquet cuisine being held in Japan at that time. The first was the "banquet of three tables," the second was the "banquet of five tables," the third was the "banquet of seven tables," and the fourth was the "banquet for drinking tea."
