A type of indoor game using dice. It is written as sugoroku and is broadly divided into the following two types. (1) Board sugoroku. It originated in Egypt in the 3rd century BC, and was introduced to Europe in the west as backgammon, and to China in the east as sugoroku. It was introduced to Japan from China around the end of the 7th century and was played until the Edo period. It is played by two players, and 15 black and white stones are placed on a board divided into 12 sections on each player's side, and two dice are rolled from a cylinder. The player moves the stones according to the number of dots on the dice, and the first player to move 15 stones into the enemy's territory wins. (2) Picture sugoroku. It is thought to have started before the Edo period. It originated from a picture (myome sugoroku, Bukpo sugoroku) of a novice monk being taught the Tendai syllabary, and it evolved into Jodo sugoroku. Players move their pieces from the start of a paper board according to the number of dots on the dice, competing to see who can win. During the Edo period, Dochu Sugoroku was popular, and various other types were invented, such as Fukujin Sugoroku and Yaro Sugoroku. Since the Meiji period, the games played as children's games during the New Year holidays belong to this type. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
