He later studied chemistry and engineering at the universities of Giessen and Karlsruhe, and worked as an engineer at a soda factory and a sulfuric acid and fertilizer company. In 1871 he became chief engineer of the Griesheim Chemical Company. He played an important role in the rise of Germany's chemical industry in the 1880s and 1890s, founding the AG Electrochemical Company in 1891 and the Griesheim Electrochemical Company in 1899. He made pioneering contributions to the development of the indigo dye industry with his pioneering achievements in electrochemical technology, such as the electrolysis of chlor-alkali (such as salt water) using a diaphragm method (1884-88), the use of by-product chlorine and hydrogen, and the manufacture of carbon electrodes.
