German chemical engineer. Born in Cologne, he attended gymnasium. He later studied chemistry and engineering at the universities of Giessen and Karlsruhe, and worked as an engineer at a soda factory and a sulfuric acid and fertilizer company. In 1871 he became chief engineer of the Griesheim Chemical Company. He played an important role in the rise of Germany's chemical industry in the 1880s and 1890s, founding the AG Electrochemical Company in 1891 and the Griesheim Electrochemical Company in 1899. He made pioneering contributions to the development of the indigo dye industry with his pioneering achievements in electrochemical technology, such as the electrolysis of chlor-alkali (such as salt water) using a diaphragm method (1884-88), the use of by-product chlorine and hydrogen, and the manufacture of carbon electrodes.

ドイツの化学技術者。ケルンに生まれ,ギムナジウムに通う。のちギーセン,カールスルーエ両大学で化学と工学を学び,技師としてソーダ工場,硫酸および肥料会社で働く。1871年からグリースハイム化学会社の技師長となる。91年にAG電気化学会社,99年にグリースハイム電気化学会社を設立するなど,1880,90年代のドイツ化学工業興隆期に重要な役割を果たした。隔膜法によるクロルアルカリ(食塩水など)の電解(1884‐88),副産塩素および水素の利用,炭素電極の製法など,電気化学技術に先駆的業績を残し,インジゴ染料工業の発展に寄与した。
