...The modern group of painters who have escaped the strong influence of the Heidelberg School are divided into two major trends: representational painters who have adopted new Western techniques and begun to express themes related to Australia with new designs, and abstract painters who have escaped the yoke of cultural nationalism and are devoted to depicting modern sensibilities from an international perspective. Representatives of the former are Drysdale and Nolan, and representatives of the latter are Ian Fairweather (1891-1974) and John Olsen (1928-). However, Fred Williams (1927-) and Brett Whiteley (1939-92) and others have tended to compromise and sublimate the opposition between representation and abstraction. ...
