...A literati painter of the Edo period. He is said to be the father of literati painting in Japan. He was born in Edo as the eldest son of Gion Junan, a doctor of the Kishu domain. His given name was Yu, and his pen name was Hakugyoku. Nankai was his pen name. He also had other pen names such as Shoun and Shinten'o. When he first met Kinoshita Junan at the age of 14 in 1689 (Genroku 2), he composed a seven-character regulated poem, surprising the Kinoshita disciples. He also presented a poem to the domain lord and received a reward, showing his rich talent for poetry and prose from a young age, and was said to be a talented Kinoshita disciple. In 1697, at the age of 22, he became a Confucian scholar for the domain, but three years later, his fief was confiscated for misconduct, he was driven out of the castle town and ordered to live in exile in a remote countryside. ...

…江戸時代の文人画家。日本における文人画の祖といわれる。紀州藩の藩医祇園順庵の長子として江戸に生まれる。名は瑜,字は伯玉。南海は号。湘雲,信天翁などの別号がある。1689年(元禄2)14歳で初めて木下順庵に謁した際,七言律詩を賦して木門諸子を驚かす。また藩主に詩を献じて褒美を拝領するなど年少のころから詩文に豊かな才能を示し木下門下の逸材といわれた。97年22歳で藩の儒官となるが,3年後,不行跡によって知行を召し上げられ,城下を追われて片田舎に謫居(たつきよ)を命ぜられる。…
