Atari

Japanese: アタリ
Atari
A term used in Japanese music. Also written as "atari" or "atari." The name of a vocal technique or melody type. It varies depending on the genre and school. (1) Shomyo In Tendai Shomyo, it means to raise the after-beat as if hitting the target and then return to the original position, but it can also be used in combination with other techniques. In the Nanzan Shingon school of Shingon, it means to sing the birth character as if it is cut off instantly. (2) Yokyoku In the Kanze school, it means to have a modified downward movement at the end of the tone (however, in Tsuyogin, it goes upward). In the musical score, "a" is called atari, but is no longer used today. In the Hosho school, it means a short pause in the breath. In the Konparu school, it is a technique used when sending off "ochi" or "sage". (3) Jiuta Singing the birth character as if hitting the target. It is often used in descending melodies, and it is raised like an after-beat of about a fourth and then returned. It is said to have started in the time of Tsuyama Kengyo. (4) Yamada school Sokyoku A technique like a glottal trill. (5) Nagauta and other shamisen music: Singing with one note for each syllable of the lyrics, and keeping the beat of the vocals in sync with the beat of the shamisen accompaniment.
