…Following German settlement geography, in 1913 Takuji Ogawa was the first to translate Einzelhof, a prominent feature of the Westphalia region of Germany, into “isolated manor house,” and argued that this was applicable to the scattered villages of the Etchu Tonami region, that their origins were derived from the land allotment system, and that the reason for their survival was land policy and the wisdom of self-defense from the Föhn. He also noted that moated settlements called “kaito” were found in the jori system areas of the Yamato Basin, and called them “jori-style villages” or “kakiuchi-style villages” based on the jori system, bringing Japanese settlement forms into the global field of settlement geography research. This led to deeper research on the distribution and history of villages, and on the topic of clustered and scattered villages. …
