…Following German settlement geography, in 1913 Takuji Ogawa was the first to translate Einzelhof, a prominent feature of the Westphalia region of Germany, into “isolated manor house,” and argued that this was applicable to the scattered villages of the Etchu Tonami region, that their origins were derived from the land allotment system, and that the reason for their survival was land policy and the wisdom of self-defense from the Föhn. He also noted that moated settlements called “kaito” were found in the jori system areas of the Yamato Basin, and called them “jori-style villages” or “kakiuchi-style villages” based on the jori system, bringing Japanese settlement forms into the global field of settlement geography research. This led to deeper research on the distribution and history of villages, and on the topic of clustered and scattered villages. …

…ドイツ集落地理学をうけて1913年小川琢治が，ドイツのウェストファーレン地方に顕著にみられるEinzelhofに初めて〈孤立荘宅〉の訳を与え，これが越中砺波（となみ）地方の散村に適用される性格のものであり，その起源が班田制に由来するとともに，その存続要因が土地政策とフェーンからの自衛的な生活の知恵であるとした。また，これとともに大和盆地の条里施行地域に垣内（かいと）の名称をもつ環濠集落がみられることに着目し，条里制による〈条里式村落〉あるいは〈垣内式村落〉と呼称して，日本の集落形態を世界的な集落地理学研究の場に引き出した。これを受けて村落の面では分布的に，また史的に集村･散村についての研究が深まった。…
