The third king of France in the Valois dynasty. Reigned from 1364 to 1380. Known as Le Sage, the Wise King. Eldest son of John II. After the defeat at Poitiers (1356), in which his father was taken prisoner, he served as regent as crown prince. In 1358, he suppressed the revolt of Étienne Marcel and the citizens of Paris, as well as the Jacquerie rebellion. After the humiliating Treaty of Brétigny, he became king at the age of 27, and, placing the famous general Du Guesclin in charge, he resumed fighting against the English. By the time of his death in 1380, the only territories occupied by the English were Calais, Bordeaux, Bayonne, and other small areas.

バロア朝第3代のフランス国王。在位1364‐80年。賢王le Sageと呼ばれた。ジャン2世の長子。父王が捕虜となったポアティエの敗戦(1356)後，皇太子として摂政。1358年，エティエンヌ･マルセルとパリ市民の反乱やジャックリーの乱を鎮圧。ブレティニの屈辱的和約の後，27歳で王位につき，名将デュ･ゲクランを重用，イギリスとの戦いを再開し，彼が没した80年には，イギリス側の占領地はわずかにカレー，ボルドー，バイヨンヌその他を残すのみとなった。
