1337‐80 The third king of France in the Valois dynasty. Reigned from 1364 to 1380. Known as Le Sage, the Wise King. Eldest son of John II. After the defeat at Poitiers (1356), in which his father was taken prisoner, he served as regent as crown prince. In 1358, he suppressed the revolt of Étienne Marcel and the citizens of Paris, as well as the Jacquerie rebellion. After the humiliating Treaty of Brétigny, he became king at the age of 27, and, placing the famous general Du Guesclin in charge, he resumed fighting against the English. By the time of his death in 1380, the only territories occupied by the English were Calais, Bordeaux, Bayonne, and other small areas. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
