It is a marine fish of the Osteichthyes class, Tetraodontiformes order, and family Tetraodontiidae. It is widely distributed in areas south of the Chubu region of Honshu, as well as in the tropical waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its body is laterally compressed and slender, with its entire body covered in rough small scales. Its dorsal and pelvic fins have long, hard spines. The dorsal side of its body is dark gray and the ventral side is silver. There is a large black spot on the first dorsal fin. It can reach a total length of 25 centimeters. It swims in shallow schools along the coast. It spawns in June and July, and the eggs are spherical, detached, pelagic eggs. Its meat is delicious.

硬骨魚綱フグ目ギマ科に属する海水魚。本州中部地方以南の各地、および太平洋とインド洋の熱帯水域に広く分布する。体は側扁(そくへん)して細長く、体の全面が粗雑な小鱗(しょうりん)に覆われる。背びれと腹びれの棘(とげ)は硬くて長い。体の背側は暗灰色で腹側は銀色。第1背びれに大きな黒斑(こくはん)がある。全長25センチメートルに達する。沿岸の浅所を群泳する。産卵期は6、7月で、卵は球形の分離浮性卵。肉は美味である。
