1880‐1940 A leader of the Zionist movement. Born in Odessa in southern Russia, he experienced persecution of the Jews and became sympathetic to Zionism. During World War I, he worked hard to organize a Jewish unit, and served on the Palestinian front as a member of it, with the backing of Britain. In 1923, in opposition to moderates such as Weizmann, he formed the Zionist Revisionist Group, which advocated mass immigration to Palestine and the organization of a Jewish defense force, and won strong support among young Jews in Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe.
