Vladimir Zhabotinskii

1880‐1940
A leader of the Zionist movement. Born in Odessa in southern Russia, he experienced persecution of the Jews and became sympathetic to Zionism. During World War I, he worked hard to organize a Jewish unit, and served on the Palestinian front as a member of it, with the backing of Britain. In 1923, in opposition to moderates such as Weizmann, he formed the Zionist Revisionist Group, which advocated mass immigration to Palestine and the organization of a Jewish defense force, and won strong support among young Jews in Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe.

シオニズム運動の指導者。南ロシアのオデッサに生まれ，ユダヤ人迫害を体験してシオニズムに共鳴。第1次大戦中ユダヤ人独自の部隊の編成に奔走し，イギリスをバックにみずからもその一員としてパレスティナの戦線で従軍した。1923年ワイツマンら穏健派に反発してシオニスト修正主義者団を結成，パレスティナへの大量移住と独自の防衛軍の編成などを主張し，ポーランドその他東ヨーロッパのユダヤ人青年のあいだで強い支持を得た。
