Fusel oil - Fusel oil

A yellow or brown liquid (specific gravity 0.81-0.83) separated as a by-product during the refining process of ethanol (ethyl alcohol) produced by fermenting starch or sugar. The composition varies depending on the raw materials used, but the main components are isoamyl alcohol and activated amyl alcohol, with other components including isobutyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, and other higher alcohols. When refined by chemical processing or distillation, it is almost always a mixture of the two types of amyl alcohol mentioned above, and is used as it is or as an acetate ester (commonly known as fusel acetate) as a solvent for alkyd resin, nitrocellulose, and other synthetic resins.

デンプンや糖類の発酵でエタノール（エチルアルコール）をつくる際、精製時の副産物として分離される黄色ないし褐色の液体（比重0.81～0.83）。用いる原料によって組成も変わるが、主成分はイソアミルアルコール、活性アミルアルコールで、そのほかイソブチルアルコール、n‐プロピルアルコール、その他の高級アルコールが含まれる。化学処理や蒸留などによって精製したものは、ほぼ前記2種のアミルアルコールの混合物であり、そのままか、あるいは酢酸エステル（通称は酢酸フーゼル）にして、アルキド樹脂、ニトロセルロースなど合成樹脂類の溶剤に用いられる。
