The research method adopted by William Blades (1824-90), known as the father of modern bibliography, in his major work, The Life and Printing of Caxton, was described by Henry Bradshaw (1831-86), who is revered as the mother of modern bibliography, as the "natural history method." In a letter to a friend, Bradshaw stated, "My method is to arrange the facts I have obtained in a strict manner so that they stand clearly and speak for themselves," which is clearly a Darwinian methodology. …

...After a while, bibliophiles such as Nodier, Napoleon, T. Dibdin, AE Newton, and A. Lang appeared, and the hobby of collecting old books became popular. In addition, some people such as W. Blades considered old books to be the intellectual heritage of mankind, and argued that it was the duty of succeeding generations to preserve them. The value of old books came to be widely recognized.
