Gatun - Gatun

The Panama Canal is a complex of 1,000 square kilometres (400 ^km2) long and 1,000 meters (6,100 sq mi). The Gatun Dam was built in 1912 to contain the Chagres River and form the top of a lock canal. The reservoir upstream is used to keep the lake level at a constant 90 feet (26 m).
