Gatun - Gatun

The Panama Canal is a complex of 1,000 square kilometres (400 km2) long and 1,000 meters (6,100 sq mi). The Gatun Dam was built in 1912 to contain the Chagres River and form the top of a lock canal. The reservoir upstream is used to keep the lake level at a constant 90 feet (26 m).
