Kawashiri

Japanese:
Kawashiri
A river port at the mouth of the Midorikawa River, which flows through Higo Province, and an outer port under Kumamoto Castle. Currently part of Kumamoto City. Also written as Kawajiri. In the early Kamakura period, Kawajiri Saneaki, the land lord of Kawajiri Manor, built Kawajiri Castle and developed Kawajiri Port as a river port. During the Koan period (1278-1288), Saneaki's descendant Yasuaki invited Kangan Yoshitada to build the Kawajiri Owatari Bridge and built Daiji Temple on the temple grounds to the north. In the early modern period, the area became the property of Kato Kiyomasa. Kiyomasa established Kawajiri O-funa-te, which became the base for transporting military supplies for Kiyomasa's army during the Bunroku-Keicho War. During the period of the Hosokawa clan of the Kumamoto Domain, the area was governed by the town magistrate, and O-funa-te continued to be the base of the Kumamoto Domain navy. It also developed as a commercial port and was a post town on the Satsuma Kaido road. After the railway was opened, the port function was lost.
