Beyond the Brink of Death

This is a reportage novel by Kagawa Toyohiko. The first half was serialized in Kaizo magazine from January to May 1920 (Taisho 9), and the second half was published by Kaizosha in October, becoming a bestseller. It is a biography of the protagonist Niimi Eiichi, who is reminiscent of the author himself. After undergoing various spiritual journeys, he enters the slums of Shinkawa in Fukiai, Kobe, and works to spread Christianity, devoting himself to helping the poor and labor disputes. The significance of this work in its time lies in the fact that it tackles real social issues in the form of reportage from the standpoint of Christian socialism. It forms a trilogy with the subsequent works Taiyo wo ishite mono (Taiyo wo ishite mono) (1921) and Kabe no koe kiku toki (When the Wall Voice is Heard) (1924).

賀川豊彦(かがわとよひこ)のルポルタージュ小説。1920年（大正9）1～5月に前半を『改造』に連載、後半を加えて10月改造社から刊行、ベストセラーとなる。内容は、作者を思わせる主人公新見栄一の半生記である。彼はさまざまな精神の遍歴を経たのち、神戸葺合(ふきあい)新川の貧民窟(くつ)に入り、キリスト教の伝道に努め、貧民救済や労働争議に献身する。キリスト教的社会主義の立場から現実の社会問題をルポルタージュの形で取り上げたところに、この作品の時代的意味がある。後続する『太陽を射るもの』（1921）、『壁の声きく時』（1924）と三部作をなす。
