Sichuan [Province] - Sichuan
A province in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in western China. Its name is Chuan, and it is also called Shu. Its capital is Chengdu. Its topography is roughly divided into the Sichuan Basin in the central and eastern parts, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the western part. The plains have a warm climate and good water resources, and have been a wealthy land since ancient times. It is the number one producer of rice in the country, and other crops include barley, wheat, corn, sweet potatoes, and sugarcane. It is also famous for livestock farming, and has abundant mineral products such as timber, tung oil, yellow wax, and medicinal materials, well salt, coal, iron, petroleum, asbestos, copper, and other non-ferrous metals. Modern industry is centered in Chengdu and Chongqing, and includes steel, food, chemicals, machinery, spinning, and papermaking. Traditional industries such as silk weaving, embroidery, cotton, linen, and bamboo ware are also thriving. In addition to water transport on the Yangtze River and its tributaries, land transport is also well developed, including the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway (Chengdu - Chongqing), the Baocheng Railway (Baoji - Chengdu), the Kangxi Highway and the Cheng'a Highway. Chongqing integrated with the surrounding areas and became a direct-controlled municipality in the spring of 1997. 488,000 km2 . 90.97 million people (2014).

中国西部,長江上流の省。簡名は川,蜀(しょく)とも称す。省都は成都。地形は,中央部・東部の四川盆地と西部の青蔵高原とに大別され,平野部は気候温暖で水利よく,古来富裕の土地である。農産物では水稲の産出は全国第1位,ほかに大麦,小麦,トウモロコシ,サツマイモ,サトウキビなどが多く,畜産も有名で,木材,桐油,黄白蝋,薬材などの林産物,井塩,石炭,鉄,石油,石綿,銅その他の有色金属など豊富な鉱産物がある。近代工業は成都,重慶を中心に行われ,鉄鋼,食品,化学,機械,紡績,製紙などがあり,また絹織物,刺繍,綿,麻布,竹器など伝統産業も盛んである。長江本・支流の水運をはじめ,成渝鉄路(成都〜重慶)・宝成鉄路(宝鶏〜成都)や,康蔵公路・成阿公路などの陸上交通も発達している。なお,重慶は周辺の地域を統合し1997年春に直轄市となった。48万8000km2。9097万人(2014)。
