The Portrait of a Lady

Japanese: ある婦人の肖像 - あるふじんのしょうぞう(英語表記)The Portrait of a Lady
The Portrait of a Lady

This is one of the "International Tales," a representative early novel by the American novelist Henry James. It was published in 1881. The protagonist, Isabel, is an American girl who idealizes the freedom and infinite exploration of life. She travels to England with her aunt and meets her uncle Touchett, a banker, and his son Ralph. In order to stick to her ideals, she turns down marriage proposals from the British aristocrat Lord Warburton and the American businessman Caspar Goodwood, but thanks to Ralph's kindness, she receives part of her uncle's inheritance and gains even greater freedom in life. Later, in Florence, she is introduced by the elegant Madame Mare to Gilbert Osmond, who seems to be the apostle of beauty and is accompanied by a beautiful girl, and they get married, but she discovers that they have been deceived by a scheme aimed at obtaining a dowry for the girl. Despite this, Isabel dares to accept a life of restrictions and suffering, and hopes to mature as a human being through it, making this a work based on irony.
