〘noun〙① A pun on a commonly used idiom. Examples include "A four-gallon barrel outside the fence" (a play on Kakinomoto no Hitomaro) , and "A wanderer does not hold down his sake cup" (a play on the phrase "Spring sleep does not remind the dawn"). A mouth. A jiguri. ※Essays, Dokusetsu (around 1724), vol. 1: "The saying "jiguchi" was rarely used in the past." ※Miscellaneous haiku, Yanagi Taru-san (1768), "It is a pun often used by the mountain people of Yoshino." ② An abbreviation of "jiguchi andon (pun lantern)." ※Kabuki, Utsunomiya Momiji Tsurifuton (Utsunomiya Tsuri Tenjo) (1874), prologue: "The pun yamatagi (pun lantern), and the flowers in the garden are also very beautiful, says the front maid." ③ The length of the lot along the road, or the frontage of a house. ④ Abbreviation of "Jiguchisen (local entrance money)". ※Yasuhtomi-ki - May 9, 1401 (8th year of Oei) "This year, a new portable shrine was made at the local entrance in Kyoto" [Additional notes] (Regarding ①) It means "local entrance " and is said to refer to something that was popular in Edo around the Kyoho era ( 1716-1736) as opposed to the "Kuchiai" that was held in Kyoto and Osaka . One theory is that it means "similar entrance " and means similar words.

Jiggurujigguru [pun]

〘名〙① ふつう世間に行なわれている成語に語呂を合わせたことばのしゃれ。「柿本人麻呂」にかけて「垣の外(そと)の四斗樽(しとだる)」、「春眠暁をおぼえず」にかけて「遊人盃を押えず」という類。くちあい。じぐり。※随筆・独寝(1724頃)上「じぐちをいふ事、ひところめったにはやりけれど」※雑俳・柳多留‐三(1768)「よしの山人のよくいふ地口也」② 「じぐちあんどん(地口行灯)」の略。※歌舞伎・宇都宮紅葉釣衾(宇都宮釣天井)(1874)序幕「地口やまたぎ、作り庭立花も大層綺麗なと最前小使ひの話し」③ 道路面に沿った敷地の長さ、また、家屋の間口をいう。④ 「じぐちせん(地口銭)」の略。※康富記‐応永八年(1401)五月九日「今年洛中地口ニテ神輿造替也」[補注](①について) 「土地の口合(くちあい)」を意味し、京坂で行なわれた「口合」に対し、享保(一七一六‐三六)の頃江戸で流行ったものを指すとされる。一説には「似口(じぐち)」で、似通った言葉の意ともされる。

じぐ・る ヂぐる【地口】
