The degree to which one prefers consuming in the present over consuming in the future is called the rate of time preference, or simply time preference. Conventional economic theory is built on the basis of an individual's utility (satisfaction) obtained from consumption activities from the present to the future. Time preference is one of the factors that specify the structure of that utility. Specifically, it is defined as the value obtained by subtracting 1 from the increase in future consumption required to maintain the same utility as before when current consumption is reduced by one unit.
