Superoxide ion (superoxide ion) is a molecular species containing oxygen in an active state that is unstable and has a strong oxidizing power, as typified by O 2 (-/). In addition to O 2 (-/), other examples include the hydroxyl free radical (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ). It can even include hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). In living organisms, it is produced by the oxidation of reducing substances or by radiation, and has the effect of severely damaging cellular tissues. The function of active oxygen is related to immunity, carcinogenesis, aging, and other factors, and is being actively studied. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that detoxifies excess active oxygen, and is found in all living organisms except anaerobic bacteria. → Related topics Catechin | Beta-carotene | Monk fruit Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
