Superoxide ion (superoxide ion) is a molecular species containing oxygen in an active state that is unstable and has a strong oxidizing power, as typified by O ₂ (-/). In addition to O ₂ (-/), other examples include the hydroxyl free radical (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( ¹ O ₂ ). It can even include hydrogen peroxide (H ₂ O ₂ ). In living organisms, it is produced by the oxidation of reducing substances or by radiation, and has the effect of severely damaging cellular tissues. The function of active oxygen is related to immunity, carcinogenesis, aging, and other factors, and is being actively studied. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that detoxifies excess active oxygen, and is found in all living organisms except anaerobic bacteria.

スーパーオキシドイオン（超酸化物イオン）O₂(-/)に代表される，不安定で酸化力のきわめて強い，活性状態の酸素を含む分子種をいう。O₂(-/)のほか，ヒドロキシル遊離基（・OH），一重項酸素（¹O₂）など。過酸化水素（H₂O₂）まで含めることもある。生体では，還元物質の酸化や放射線などによって生じ，細胞組織をいちじるしく傷つける作用をもつ。活性酸素の働きは，免疫，発癌，老化などに関連しており，盛んに研究されている。スーパーオキシドジスムターゼ（SOD）は，過剰に生じた活性酸素を無毒化する酵素で，嫌気(けんき)性細菌を除くすべての生物がもっている。
