The opposite concept of the relative. It means something that exists on its own, is not restricted or limited by anything else, and is also called "the Unconstrained One" (das Unbedingte). For Schelling, the Absolute is sought as an undifferentiated identity that exists at the root of both spirit and nature, infinitely transcending the finite world. In contrast, Hegel believes that what is opposed to the finite is not the Absolute, but is itself merely a kind of finite, and that the true Absolute is the identity that includes all discriminations, the infinite that includes the finite. For him, the Absolute is something that develops and realizes itself in the historical world, and is understood as spirit, so to speak.

相対者の反対概念。それ自身において存立し、他の何ものによっても制約されず、限界づけられないものをいい、「無制約者」das Unbedingteともよばれる。シェリングにおいて、絶対者は精神と自然の両者の根底に存する無差別的な同一者として、有限な世界を限りなく超越したところに求められた。これに反し、ヘーゲルは、有限者に対立するものは絶対者ではなく、それ自身一種の有限者にすぎない、真の絶対者はあらゆる差別を含んだ同一者、有限者を含んだ無限者であると考える。彼において絶対者は、発展的に歴史的世界において自己を実現してゆくものであり、いわば精神として把握されていたのである。
