Indonesia's national airline. Abbreviated as GIA. Indonesia was a Dutch colony before World War II and suffered heavy damage during the war, but the Dutch government and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) established the Dutch Government Air Transport Service Company and quickly resumed operations to major cities in the former Dutch colonies of Europe and Southeast Asia after the war. In 1946, KLM took over these routes from the Dutch Government Air Transport Service Company. In 1949, when Indonesia gained independence from the Netherlands, the Indonesian government established Garuda Indonesia, taking over the routes operated by KLM. KLM invested 50% of the company's capital. In 1954, it was nationalized 100%. The company's name comes from the Hindu god Garuda (a divine bird that is said to be the vehicle of the god Vishnu in Hindu mythology). From its bases at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in the capital Jakarta and Denpasar International Airport on the island of Bali, it connects 19 countries and 31 cities in the country (as of 2011). The airline began flying into Japan at Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) in 1962. As of 2011, it operates flights to three airports: Narita, Kansai, and Chubu.

As of 2009, the airline had 48 aircraft and 5,808 employees. Its operating revenue in 2010 was Rp 19,534 billion.

インドネシアの国有航空会社。略称GIA。第二次世界大戦前はオランダ領であったインドネシアは同大戦で大きな被害を受けたが、オランダ政府とKLMオランダ航空（KLM）はオランダ政府航空輸送サービス会社を設立して戦後いち早くヨーロッパおよび東南アジアの旧オランダ領などの主要都市に運航を再開し、1946年にKLMはこれらの路線を政府航空輸送サービス会社から引き継いだ。1949年、インドネシアがオランダから独立する際に、インドネシア政府はKLMが運行していた路線を引き継いでガルーダ・インドネシア航空を設立。その資本金の50％はKLMが出資した。1954年に100％国有化された。社名はヒンドゥー教のガルーダ（ヒンドゥー教神話で、ビシュヌ神の乗り物とされる神鳥）にちなんで名づけられた。首都ジャカルタのスカルノ・ハッタ空港およびバリ島のデンパサール国際空港を拠点に、世界19か国、国内31都市を結んでいる（2011年時点）。日本へは1962年（昭和37）、東京国際空港（羽田空港）に乗り入れた。2011年（平成23）時点では、成田、関西、中部の3空港に就航している。

　2009年時点の保有機材は48機、従業員数5808人。2010年の営業収入は19兆5340億ルピア。
