From 1583 (Tensho 11) to around 1596 (Keicho 1), this place name was used instead of Kanazawa. After the fall of Kanazawa Mido (the base of the Kaga Ikko Ikki rebellion) in 1580, Sakuma Morimasa, a subordinate of Shibata Katsuie, made the site of the Mido into Kanazawa Castle and resided there until 1583, but when Maeda Toshiie entered Kaga in April of the same year, he used the name Oyama instead of Kanazawa. The reason why Toshiie changed the name to Oyama is unclear, but one theory is that he avoided the name Kanazawa, which is associated with his enemies Kanazawa Mido and Sakuma Morimasa, and used Oyama, which is also associated with his hometown of Owari. After Toshiie's death, Maeda Toshinaga changed the name back to Kanazawa, but the name Oyama was still used and continued to be used in rural areas even after World War II.
